Carb Counting

Learn how to confidently estimate carbohydrates in everyday Indian meals and match insulin with greater confidence.

What is carb counting?

Carbs are little bits of energy hiding inside food, like in rice, roti, and fruit. Carb counting is like being a detective. You look at your plate and guess how many carb 'points' are hiding in it. This helps grown-ups know how much insulin key is needed to open the sugar doors.

Standard Indian Plate

50g

Imagine a normal Indian thali plate with some rice or rotis, dal, and vegetables. A plate like that usually hides about 50 carb points in it. This is just a starting example to help you imagine the size, like a ruler for guessing.

How to count carbs

1

Look at your plate

First, look at everything on your plate. Rice, roti, dal, sabzi, fruit — find all the food.

2

Find the carb foods

Some foods have lots of carbs, like rice, roti, potato, and fruit. Some foods have very few carbs, like leafy vegetables, paneer, and chicken.

3

Guess the size

Is it a small bowl or a big bowl? A small roti or a big one? Bigger food usually means more carb points.

4

Add it all up

Add the carb points from each food together, just like counting your toy blocks, to get the total for your plate.

Carb counting is like being a food detective. You spot the carb foods on your plate, guess their size, and add up the points. This helps keep the body's energy balanced and steady.

These numbers are simple learning examples only, not exact medical measurements. Always check real carb counts and insulin doses with a doctor or dietitian.
